About the ECMPMR Project

T
he Purple Martin population in Minnesota has decreased nearly 80% over the past 40 years according to the Audubon Society.  The population is continuing to decline by 3.8% each year according to the Breeding Bird Survey.  In response to this information, the East Central Minnesota Purple Martin Recovery project was established and has grown to six public colony sites located across the region.  ECMPMR colonies, which are extensively managed on a volunteer basis, serve to expose the general public to Purple Martins as well as help foster a healthy increase in the local Purple Martin population.

Many Purple Martins fledge from ECMPMR colonies each year.  When these birds return in the spring they will need additional safe and productive places to nest.  If you know of an adequate location for a Purple Martin colony, you are strongly encouraged to put up high quality housing and practice proper management techniques to help increase the declining Purple Martin population.  If you plan to put up housing, it is highly recommended that you install a T-14 Purple Martin House (from the Birds' Paradise) and/or a gourd rack (from CUENT) fitted with Excluder Gourds, all with the modified excluder SREH.  This is the same setup found at ECMPMR colonies.  Local Purple Martins are expected to imprint on this housing.  When returning birds see a T-14 Purple Martin House or a gourd rack similar to what they were raised in, they may recognize it as high-quality housing and be more likely to nest.
